The Diocese is mourning the passing of a Senior Priest. Reverend Bernard F. Grega passed on December 21 at Maple Winds Center in Portage.
He was born January 12, 1937, in Clymer, Pennsylvania, the son of the late George and Mary Ann (Hlatky) Grega. Father Grega attended Saint Francis Seminary in Loretto and was ordained a priest at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in Altoona in 1962.
He served as Assistant Pastor at Saint Leo Parish in Altoona and Saint Stephen Parish in Johnstown. He was appointed Pastor of Saint John Parish in Barnesboro in 1973 and Pastor of Assumption Parish in Conemaugh in 1995. He served as Pastor of Holy Family Parish in Colver from 2000 until his retirement in 2018. Father Grega was also a former educator at Bishop Guilfoyle and Bishop McCort Catholic High Schools.
A viewing will be held on December 23 from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Matevish & Matevish Funeral Home, 307 North Center Street, Ebensburg. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on December 24 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Name Parish in Ebensburg with Bishop Mark Bartchak as celebrant and homilist. A committal at Saint Bernard Cemetery in Indiana, Pennsylvania, will follow.
