The Very Reverend William Walter Santre, TOR, 85, died on November 9, 2019, at Conemaugh Nason Medical Center, Roaring Spring, PA. He was born March 8, 1934 in Maspeth (Queens), NY, the only child of Willliam and Charlotte (Conklin) Santre.
He entered the Franciscans of the Third Order Regular, Province of the Immaculate Conception, USA in September 1952 and professed Solemn Vows on July 17, 1957. After completing his studies at the Catholic University of America, Washington, DC, he was ordained a priest on June 3, 1961. In the course of his 65 years of Franciscan vowed life, Father William served the Church and the Franciscan community in many capacities, including high school instructor at the Highland Hall Franciscan Preparatory Seminary, Hollidaysburg, PA and at Cathedral High School, St. Cloud, MN, Parochial Vicar at St. Veronica’s Church, NY, and Parochial Vicar and Pastor at St. Anthony’s Church, Johnstown, PA, Pastor at St. Anthony of Padua Church, Windber, PA, Parochial Vicar at St. John Gualbert, Johnstown, PA, and Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, Altoona, PA. Father William served the Province of the Immaculate Conception as Minister Provincial, Vicar Provincial, Provincial Councilor, and Provincial Econome.
He is predeceased by his parents and survived by his Franciscan Community, Sister Barbara Worn, SND, and many friends.
Friends will be received from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday, November 14, 2019 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, where a vigil for the deceased will be held at 6:45 p.m. Funeral Mass will be concelebrated at 10:00 a.m. Friday, November 15, 2019 at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, the Very Reverend Frank Scornaienchi, TOR, Minister Provincial, as main celebrant, along with the members of the Third Order Regular Franciscan Community. Committal will follow at the Franciscan Friars’ Community Cemetery, St. Bernardine Monastery.
