May is moving quickly and the end of the school year at Holy Name School is only weeks away. This column was prepared by members of the eighth grade class.

Five Holy Name School students were honored at the Bishop’s Night for Vocations of the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown at Bishop Carroll Catholic High School on Friday, May 10, 2019.  These students received awards for their entries into the Vocation Contest earlier this year that followed the theme “Open Your Heart to Respond to the Call of God.” Mary Haigh, 2nd grade, received 2nd place for her poster; Raigan Myers, 4th grade, received 1st place for her poster; Jenna Westrick, 8th grade, received 2nd place for her poster; Shelley Yogus, 7th grade, received 3rd place for her poem, and Ava Lonesky, 8th grade, received 2nd place for her poem.

This week is also a week of commencement for Holy Name School. The Kindergarten graduation took place on Tuesday, May 21, 2019. Many parents and grandparents were in attendance to observe this important milestone for these students.
On Wednesday, our 4-year-old Preschool students graduated. The ceremony provided an opportunity for these young students to demonstrate what they have learned for their families as they have prepared to move forward to kindergarten.
Tomorrow, the Eighth Grade Graduation ceremony will begin with a liturgy in which the students will act as readers, cantors and liturgical musicians. The ceremony will include the presentation of awards and diplomas as we recognize the accomplishments of these young men and women as they leave Holy Name School at attend high school in the fall.

Our final quote is from Malcolm X: “Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.”
