Outdoor Summer Masses to Be Celebrated in Loretto

656

A summer tradition is returning to Loretto.

Outdoor summer Masses will once again be celebrated at the beautiful and historic Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine, located next to the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel.

The Masses will be celebrated every Sunday evening at 7:00 p.m. beginning on May 28, 2023, and continuing through September 3, 2023.

Along with the Basilica Rector, the Very Reverend John Byrnes, JCL, JV, volunteers from the parish lovingly dedicate their time and talent each week for the celebrations in one of the most peaceful and prayerful outdoor settings in the diocese.

All are welcome. Please bring a lawn chair, and in the event of inclement weather, the Mass will be celebrated inside the Basilica.

The Prince Gallitzin Chapel House, adjacent to the Our Lady of the Alleghenies Shrine, was the home and personal chapel of the Prince-Priest and Servant of God Demetrius Gallitzin. Today, it stands as a museum, which contains cherished and intriguing artifacts from Father Gallitzin’s personal life.

Although the historic site is not open for personal tours, it will be open for visiting hours on the following dates this summer: June 11, June 25, July 9, July 23, August 6, and August 20 from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

All are invited to visit the Chapel House on those dates and stay for the outdoor Mass.
