Gromnica Tradition to Be Observed at Somerset County Parish

All Saints Parish in Boswell will offer a special Mass on February 2 at 6:30 p.m. in honor of the Presentation of the Lord, or Candlemas Day.

In the Polish tradition, Candlemas is also the feast of Our Lady of the Gromnica. A Gromnica is a large, often decorated candle made of beeswax.

This special candle is lit only for the most important moments in a person’s life, such as Baptism, First Holy Communion, or when a person is on his or her death bed.

When going through a difficult time (such as a thunderstorm), the Gromnica was often lit.

A Gromnica is very often gifted at someone’s birth and used throughout a person’s lifetime, being lit for the last time during their funeral.

Each year the candle is typically brought to church on Candlemas Day in order to be blessed.

If you are interested in purchasing a Gromnica for yourself or a loved one, please contact the All Saints Parish office at (814) 629-5551.
